Northfield Mountain Nordic Ski Patrol 30th Anniversary

January 8, 2005

On January 8th, past and present members of the Northfield Mountain Nordic Ski Patrol braved one of the few snow storms of the season and gathered at the Belle Notte Ristorante in Bernardston, Massachusetts to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Patrol.  Along with this notable milestone, the Patrol carries with it the distinction of being the first Nordic Ski Patrol registered with the National Ski Patrol.  The Patrol originated with the training of the original ranger staff at Northfield Mountain, which grew to include approximately twenty-five volunteers by the end of the 1974-1975 ski season.  Thirty years later, the Patrol was recognized as the Eastern Division Nordic Patrol of the Year.  During the evening, ably MC’d by Bill Gabriel, stories were shared, proclamations read, and awards presented, while those present dined on the excellent fare, some of which was delivered by “Nordic Man”.  The evening was rounded off by a presentation by Chuck Boyd, chronicling last year’s conquest of Mount Everest by a climbing team that included Chuck and fellow NSP Patroller Dave Watson, followed by a review of the Patrol beginnings by past (and first) Patrol Leader John Frado and a slideshow presented by past Patrol Leader Bob Duris.
