From Mountain Warriors to Mountain Rescuers: Our Legacy Lives On.

The 10th Mountain Division holds a unique and influential place in the history of American skiing and the National Ski Patrol. Forged in rugged terrain and fierce winter conditions—and driven by an unwavering commitment to service—the 10th shaped not only military mountain operations but also the evolution of the modern ski industry and the culture of ski patrolling. Their story is deeply interwoven with the foundation of the NSP, especially within the Eastern Division, where tradition, service, and mountain passion continue to thrive. This page honors their legacy, celebrates the enduring connection between NSP and the 10th, and highlights how their impact continues to inspire and guide the mountains we protect today.

10th Mountain Division: A Legacy of Service and Skiing

The story of the 10th Mountain Division is closely tied to the history of the National Ski Patrol. During World War II, NSP founder Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole recognized the Army’s need for soldiers trained to operate in extreme winter mountain conditions. His advocacy for specialized alpine troops led to the formation of the 10th Mountain Division, with the National Ski Patrol playing a key role in recruiting, screening, and preparing many of the men who would become its first soldiers. These troops proved themselves in the rugged Italian Apennines, where their skill, endurance, and determination earned them a legendary reputation. After the war, 10th Mountain veterans returned home and applied their mountain expertise to the civilian world—founding ski areas, advancing lift technology, teaching skiing, and shaping the culture that continues to define American skiing today. That legacy—built on service, mountain skill, and a deep love of snow—lives on within the National Ski Patrol, especially in the Eastern Division, serving as a reminder that patrolling is more than keeping skiers safe; it is about carrying forward a remarkable tradition rooted in courage, innovation, and a shared passion for the mountains.

The 10th Mountain Legacy in American Skiing

When the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division returned home, they didn’t leave their passion for the mountains behind—they brought it into the next chapter of American skiing. Veterans of the 10th became founders, builders, and innovators across the ski industry. Many opened ski areas, designed lifts, developed instruction programs, and helped shape the organizational structure of ski patrols nationwide. Today, numerous ski resorts owe their existence, in part, to the creativity and vision of 10th Mountain veterans. Their forward-thinking approach to outdoor education and mountain safety became the foundation of what the National Ski Patrol continues to teach and practice, making their contributions essential to the sport’s growth.

Within the Eastern Division, the bond between the National Ski Patrol and the 10th Mountain Division remains strong and meaningful. Modern events, historical commemorations, and educational programs help keep that legacy alive. The Eastern Division frequently participates in gatherings such as Mountainfest at Fort Drum, descendant ski-ins, memorial traverses, and community outreach efforts. These activities provide patrollers with the chance to engage directly with the 10th Mountain community—veterans, families, historians, and supporters—while highlighting how our mission of public service, rescue, and outdoor safety is rooted in their wartime experience. Through storytelling, shared mountain culture, and ongoing collaboration, the Eastern Division continues to honor the soldiers who helped shape our identity.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

Those interested in exploring the 10th Mountain Division’s legacy can participate in a variety of commemorative events, educational programs, and community gatherings held throughout the year. Whether attending a historical presentation, joining a ski-in event, or visiting an NSP Eastern Division booth at Mountainfest, there are many ways to connect with this remarkable story. To learn more about upcoming opportunities, historical resources, or the enduring relationship between the NSP and the 10th Mountain Division, members and visitors can reach out to Eastern Division leadership or follow event announcements through NSP channels. Keeping the legacy alive is a shared effort—and everyone is welcome to be part of it.
