Florence "Floss" Kirkner

The National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame recognizes individuals whose contributions have had a lasting impact on the organization. Florence "Floss" Kirkner exemplifies that standard through more than seven decades of service, leadership, instruction, and innovation. While her many awards and leadership positions are impressive, it is her enduring influence on NSP education, avalanche training, instructor development, and youth leadership that truly distinguishes her.
In 1955, Florence became one of the first women in the National Ski Patrol to complete Monty Atwater's Avalanche Patch course, earning Avalanche Patch #82. Recognizing that advanced avalanche training reached only a limited number of patrollers, she collaborated with fellow Avalanche Patch graduates to develop the basic avalanche education program that became the NSP Circle A Avalanche Course. This curriculum introduced generations of patrollers to avalanche safety and expanded life-saving education throughout the organization. An original Circle A lesson plan included with this nomination documents her direct role in its development.
In 1964, Florence earned National Avalanche Instructor certification (#224) and became Western New York Region Avalanche Advisor. For the next 36 years, she taught Circle A, Basic Avalanche, and Level I Avalanche courses, and later served as an Avalanche Instructor Trainer, mentoring new instructors. She continually improved avalanche education by introducing realistic rescue scenarios, probe-line exercises, transceiver training, written course materials, and innovative year-round field training on the Lake Erie sand dunes.
Florence also helped shape the future of the National Ski Patrol through the Junior Patroller program, now the Young Alpine Patroller (YAP) program. From 1976 through 1987, she helped develop and teach eleven Eastern Division and five National Junior Seminars, inspiring many young participants to become lifelong NSP members and leaders.
Beyond avalanche education, Florence served as an American Red Cross Instructor Trainer in First Aid, CPR, Water Safety, and Small Craft Safety while holding numerous leadership positions at the patrol, regional, divisional, and national levels. Her contributions strengthened training, instruction, and patient care across the organization.
Although Florence has received the Distinguished Service Award, Meritorious Service Award, National Appointment, Lifetime Membership, and many other honors, her greatest legacy is found in the thousands of patrollers she instructed, the instructors she mentored, the educational programs she helped build, and the generations of volunteers who continue to benefit from her work. For more than 75 years, Florence Kirkner has advanced the National Ski Patrol through innovation, education, and selfless service. Her influence has become part of the organization's foundation, making her exceptionally deserving of induction into the National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame.
