For more than 40 years, the Nordic/Backcountry Program has been a vital part of the National Ski Patrol, supporting backcountry enthusiasts through close collaboration with:
What makes this program unique within NSP is its diversity. Nordic/Backcountry patrollers rely on a wide range of equipment, advanced patient care skills for extended situations, and essential backcountry survival knowledge. Together, these elements define the high standards of the program.
The Nordic/Backcountry Program also encourages Ski Patrol Unit Representatives overseeing backcountry or sidecountry operations to form dedicated Nordic/Backcountry Patrol Units. Likewise, patrollers working in and around traditional lift-served ski areas are invited to join. By doing so, the Eastern Division can provide specialized training tailored to Nordic/Backcountry needs—ensuring patrollers are fully prepared when called to perform “out-of-bounds” rescues.
