About the Eastern Division
|
The Eastern Division of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) is a dynamic community of over 8,000 dedicated volunteers and professionals committed to ensuring safety and providing emergency care across the Northeastern United States. Spanning 15 regions from Maine to West Virginia, our division encompasses both Alpine and Nordic ski areas, fostering a strong network of patrollers united by a shared passion for winter sports and public service.
Our mission is to deliver high-quality education and training programs that prepare our members to be proficient rescuers and emergency responders in outdoor environments. Through comprehensive programs such as Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC), Outdoor Emergency Transportation (OET), Certified Patroller, Avalanche Safety, Mountain Travel & Rescue (MTR), and Instructor Development, we equip our patrollers with the skills necessary to handle a wide range of situations on the slopes. |
Each of our 15 regions operates with its own governance model, offering localized educational courses and credentialing examinations to meet the specific needs of their communities. This structure allows for tailored support and development opportunities for our members, ensuring that they are well-prepared to serve their respective ski areas effectively.
Beyond our commitment to safety and education, the Eastern Division fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among its members. Through events, training sessions, and shared experiences, our patrollers build lasting relationships while contributing to the well-being of winter sports enthusiasts throughout the region.
Whether you're an experienced patroller or someone interested in joining our ranks, the Eastern Division of the National Ski Patrol offers a fulfilling opportunity to combine your love for winter sports with meaningful service.

History of the NSP
The National Ski Patrol (NSP) was founded by Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole in 1938. Through his efforts as the first national director of the NSP, the organization spread its effects and esprit de corps across the nation. Upon his retirement in 1950, Dole had built the NSP into an organization of 4,000 members serving 300 ski patrols. During World War II, Dole was responsible for the establishment of the famed 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army. Applicants for this remarkable military unit, which saw much of its fighting activity in Italy, were screened by the NSP. Many individuals who were responsible for the establishment of ski areas in the United States served in the 10th Mountain Division and contributed significantly to the sport.
Today, the NSP is composed of more than 28,000 members serving over 650 patrols. These individuals include alpine and Nordic patrollers, who volunteer their time (though some are paid) throughout the United States and at certain military areas in Europe. The NSP has worked closely with other countries in outdoor emergency care education, and has assisted in establishing patrol associations in Canada, Korea, New Zealand, Israel, Turkey, Argentina, and Chile, as well as the Victorian Rescue Service in Australia. |
