Memorial/Scholarship FundOn December 1, 1975, a committee was formed to create an Eastern Division Memorial Fund to provide a means of honoring and remembering Patrollers and Friends of Skiing. Their names are now engraved on plaques which are displayed at Division events throughout the year. Comprising the committee were Don Page, DD; Bruce Halliday, ED Awards Advisor; Bob Bettle, ADD; Tyler Davis, ADD; Frank Murati, SC (ENY) and Al Pels, RD (NJ). On April 25,1976, at the Eastern Division Officers Meeting, they established the NSP Eastern Division Memorial Fund. Zack Wellman became the first Fund Chairman.
Contributions to the Fund are accumulated and the interest generated is used to provide scholarship assistance to Patrollers who are furthering their education. In 2018, the Eastern Division Board voted to rename the scholarship in memory of its long-standing advisor, David J. Nelson Sr. The first scholarships in Dave’s name were awarded at the Spring Banquet on April 28th of that year. The Memorial Fund has grown over the years to over $100,000 and has awarded 153 student scholarship grants totaling over $74,000. Contributions may be made to the fund c/o Harriet L Frawley, NSP Eastern Division Memorial Fund Advisor, 70 Coventry Road, Newfoundland, NJ 07435. Please state in whose memory the gift is made and provide the address of the family. The fund will inform the family of the contribution and the name of the benefactor, without revealing the amount of the gift. The contributor will also receive a letter of thanks from the fund. In the past years we have received contributions in amounts ranging from $25.00 to $1,000.00 to be used in this very worthwhile program which remembers a colleague or loved one while supporting the future of our dedicated Patrollers. Scholarship applications are accepted beginning January 1st of each year and are reviewed prior to the Eastern Division Spring Officers Meeting. To allow sufficient time for such review, all applications are due to the fund advisor by March 31st. Scholarship awards are announced at the annual Spring Officers' Banquet. “I was in the Army’s Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery…as I looked at the rows of headstones at Arlington, I knew that they are our heroes. I think of the names on the Eastern Division Memorial Plaques as our heroes too. When one passes on, we send flowers. In a few days the flowers wilt and fade away, but not the names on our plaques.” Information & LinksA formal application is available for download and can be mailed to Harriet Frawley or click here to email - click here for the application
