US Army's 10th Mountain Division Winterfest 2023
Every year the Army's 10th Mountain Division holds its annual Winterfest Legacy Days to celebrate the 10th Mountain Division. This year The Army is executing the Hewitt Relay (run) from Ft. Drum in Watertown, NY to Whiteface Mountain, in Lake Placid, NY. It is roughly a 160 mil distance. There will be four "legs" to this event and will be run similar to a ragnar or the Peak to Brew races in the past. Ft. Drum to Star Lake, Star Lake to Tupper, Tupper to Saranac Lake, and Saranac Lake to the summit of Whiteface.
Important dates to know, June 22, 2023 to June 23, 2023 culminating in an event at Whiteface.

Important dates to know, June 22, 2023 to June 23, 2023 culminating in an event at Whiteface.
Categories of participation:
- Runner - You "may" be running with the soldiers of the 10th Mtn on the 3rd and 4th leg of the event. You can execute an 11:30 mile and are ready for a very long day in vehicles and running with the team. Looking to assemble a team of 10 runners per Leg. Other participants from NSP may be part of this team. Specifics will be ironed out on subsequent zoom calls. Leg 3 distance - 43 miles, Leg 4 distance - 30 miles. These legs are difficult with much of it uphill. We need additional runners!
- Support team - Looking for support staff for the team, drivers, food prep, water stations, and general support for our team (NSP) and the Soldiers in the event.
- Friday Ceremony team - Looking for a team of red coats, rust and blue coats to attend and participate in the rededication ceremony on Friday. Parking is limited and by advance notice pass only. You will be tasked with some set up of staging, interaction with the 10th Mtn and prepping anything that needs doing for runners, support team and the 10th Mtn.
Ultimate Goals and Objectives:
NSP and the Eastern Division is looking for a team of positive, can-do attitude ski patrollers to attend, interact, and participate in an event with and for the 10th Mountain Division. During this run, a team of 10th Mountain Division soldiers will be assaulting Whiteface Mountain via the Slides with the goal of summiting when the baton and runners (both 10th Mtn, NSP, and various others) reach the end/summit and handover the baton to the General. There will be various photo ops going on during the event with team building and interactions with all. The goal is to put together a Drum to Whiteface relay poster to commemorate the event.
There will be an after event round up with NSP and the 10th Mountain Division soldiers to “listen and discuss” the assault on Whiteface Mountain. The leadership team and anyone interested is welcome to listen and take notes. The 10th Mountain Division is top notch at this and anyone within the NSP community (MTR, Senior, Certified, YAPs) is welcome to listen. More to come.
To those available, I will forward a PowerPoint presentation to review specifics, and schedule a Zoom call to answer questions. This "event" is literally changing by the hour with updates and modifications.
We need to respect the huge quantity of moving parts to this. Any questions please call me directly - do not contact Ft. Drum, your contact is through the NSP.
Thank you in advance for your time and effort.
Best regards,
Jon Wilson
