Contributions to the National Ski Patrol:
Burt Mitchell joined the National Ski Patrol in 1988 at a small ski area in Connecticut. In the early 1990s, it became clear that he was a rising star at the local and region levels. He first served as the Assistant Patrol Representative then as the Patrol Representative before achieving his Senior status in 1998. Shortly thereafter, became a Section Chief for the Connecticut Region. He was an active and accomplished NSP Instructor and/or Instructor Trainer in the Outdoor Emergency Care, Avalanche, Mountain Travel and Rescue programs. His leadership and substantial educational program engagement resulted in his National Appointment in 2002 and he was elected as the Connecticut Region Director and a member of the Eastern Division Board of Directors. During his tenure on that Board, Burt seldom spoke, but when he did, people listened. His calm demeanor and thoughtful approach to any problem nearly always resulted in a logical, well-calculated and highly effective approach to problem resolution. In 2009, Burt Mitchell brought these leadership qualities to the national level when he was elected to the National Board of Directors and would go on to serve as the National Chairman from 2011-2013. It was a difficult transitional period as the National Board was working with a new governance structure and a new set of by-laws. During that time, Burt’s personal philosophy prevailed through his leadership and influence to ensure that: “The patroller must come first.”
