Edward F. Hirshman’s 50-year impact on the Roundtop Ski Patrol, Eastern Pennsylvania Region, Eastern Division, and the National Ski Patrol is significant and enduring.
Eddie began his service as an NSP officer as Southwest Section Chief (1989-1995) and served as Chairperson of the Section Chief Meeting during the Eastern Division meeting in 1994. In this role “Fast Eddie” became well known and respected by Section and Region patrollers.
Ed was EPA Region’s Director from 1995 until 2002 serving 22 patrols and over 1,200 patrollers. Eddie improved two-way communication with Region, Division, and National Board of Directors as well building an awards program is a benchmark. Eddie participated in Eastern Division Annual Budget Reviews, 1997-1999, and personally ensured proper funding for Region training programs. Training, especially OEC programs, was Eddie’s passion and he positively impacted OEC education programs at all levels for four decades (1972-2014). Eddie served as Eastern Division’s OEC Supervisor from 2004-2009.
Ed is a NSP ambassador always building cooperative working relationships with ski area managements and ski industry partners. He actively promotes the NSP with his leadership in Special Olympics, Wounded Warrior Patrol, Susquehanna Ski Club, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Roundtop Patrol Alumni organizations. He is enshrined in the Pennsylvania Snow Sports Museum in recognition of his support to the industry.
At the local level Eddie is best known for his mentorship of Patrol leaders; his influence directly led to Ski Roundtop becoming a world-class Patrol as evidenced by its selection in 2007 and 2017 as Eastern Division’s “Large Alpine Outstanding Patrol”.
Leadership marks “Fast Eddie’s” impact on the NSP through his love of training members and his devotion to the various levels of National Ski Patrol.
