Hi! My name is Richard, and I have patrolled at Beech Mountain for 27 years. As a financial advisor, I know how important fiduciary responsibility is for non-profits like the NSP.
I’m heading into my 28th season with the NSP and have spent the past eight years as the Blue Ridge Region OEC Administrator. I’m also an OEC instructor, an Instructor Trainer, a senior patroller and the proud father of a ski patrol candidate. Why The BOD Needs Richard
I’m heading into my 28th season with the NSP and have spent the past eight years as the Blue Ridge Region OEC Administrator. I’m also an OEC instructor, an Instructor Trainer, a senior patroller and the proud father of a ski patrol candidate. Outside of the NSP, I have years of experience as a member and Chairman of several nonprofit and governmental boards, helping them lobby government, develop strategic plans and fund-raise. My experience makes me uniquely qualified to be an immediate asset to the NSP Board and our members.
There are two areas that I believe deserve more time, talent and resources: our OEC Education program and our NSP brand recognition.
OEC is the core of our organization, our bread and butter. It is the primary differentiator between the NSP and other first responder groups. I believe it is the Board’s responsibility to protect OEC as an asset. It is also their responsibility to find new and innovative ways to educate adult learners. OEC should not be a barrier for new members, but a goal they can achieve through on site classes, distance learning and independent study.
Our Ski Patrol brand is in need of strengthening. It is recognized and respected within our industry, but outside our industry we have little name recognition. Expanding and enhancing our brand will improve or solve a multitude of challenges our organization faces. A stronger brand makes recruiting new members easier, enhances fund-raising and improves esprit de corps. It will also deepen our relationships with our industry partners and brings more value to those relationships. I believe it’s time we find new ways to stand out to our members, our industry partners, and the general public.
I believe my background and experience will bring value to our membership and the NSP Board. As the past Chairman of the Board of Education for the 5th largest school system in North Carolina, I have faced the difficulties of balancing the needs of the individual and the goals of the organization as a whole. I have experienced being the lone voice struggling to bring consensus and compromise to a heated issue.
As the owner of a financial services company, I put the needs of my clients above my own on a daily basis. As a member of the NSP Board I will bring that fiduciary responsibility to bear for the membership. Board members have a responsibility to spend your money wisely and not saddle the membership with unnecessary policies and procedures. I will ask myself if we are making a decision because it feels good, or because we are doing good. Vote for me and I will make sure the board is doing good for our members, our industry partners, the general public and the future of the National Ski Patrol.
