Management and Leadership Development

Introduction to Management and Leadership Development

NSP recognizes that quality leadership is a key to any effective organization. While leadership is a broad and complex topic, this site pertains to two concepts, management and leadership development with a focus on our organization.

The objectives of the Management and Leadership Development materials are:
  • to provide its membership with educational resources to help them fulfill the duties required of them
  • to provide information about our NSP organization’s structure and create an interest for future patrollers to be leaders of our organization.
It is in this vein that the materials have been developed. These modules may be an adjunct for those divisions that have programs and a beginning for those that don’t.  More modules may be posted as this page is developed.

About The Modules:

These modules can be used in a variety of ways.  In workshops they can be activities to discuss leadership skills, explore NSP documents, as a set to introduce further specific checklists, to promote group discussions on best practices, or just read as a personal review.

Knowledge is a key component to management. The P&Ps and NSP website are guiding documents.  Officers and advisors should have a working knowledge of the information they contain. The modules of Leading into the P&Ps and Where in the Web introduce the reader to these documents.
The Patrol Representative/Director Checklists provide lists of seasonal duties.  Each patrol and area has specific needs, but these could be used as a template for the new PD/PR .

Within the NSP there are a variety of leadership positions from officer to advisor to on-hill management. The Leadership Traits and Skills module provides an activity for leadership development through scenarios and discussion.
